Review

Thank you to NetGalley and Mira Books for providing me with a review copy of Sleepless in Manhattan.

When you open a book by Sarah Morgan, you just know that something good is on its way and Sleepless in Manhattan is no exception. She really is the queen of romance.

Sleepless in Manhattan is the first in Morgan’s new trilogy ‘From Manhattan With Love’ and revolves around Paige and her two best friends, Eva and Frankie who all hail from Puffin Island (a reference to Morgan’s earlier series). The women both live and work together in New York City.

When their lives are suddenly turned upside down, the women have to make a quick decision about their futures. Following a suggestion from Jake (best friend of Paige’s brother, Matt), the girls decide to set up business together and hence Urban Genie is born. The story follows them through all the trials and tribulations involved in setting up a business from scratch.

First, I love New York City and this book instantly appealed to me as a result of the setting alone. You can feel the vitality and liveliness of the city breathing through the pages!

The characters are likeable and realistic. The three women are very different individuals, yet they really are the best of friends. Paige is the central character in this first book. Having had her childhood taken away through illness, she has made it out the other side and has become a strong and independent woman. She is kind, loyal, ambitious and hard-working, with a real drive to prove that she can make a success of herself without anyone else protecting her. Whilst this is her strength, it also proves to be her weakness as she struggles to accept help from anyone even when she is desperately in need of assistance. Eva is a ‘head in the clouds’ health nut with a love of cooking and a very sentimental side, tearing up at a moment’s notice, Frankie comes across as being much tougher to get to know than Paige or Eva. She’s cautious and reserved, trusting her beloved plants more than people.

In addition to the women, there are some fantastic supporting characters in the form of Paige’s over-protective but lovely brother, Matt and his gorgeous but infuriating friend, Jake.

On the romance front, Morgan certainly knows how to create sexual tension and the chemistry between Paige and Jake virtually blazes out of the page. However, they also come with history. Jake broke Paige’s heart when she was a teenager and every time she sees him she cannot help but remember those feelings of rejection. Jake has a constant stream of beautiful women on his arm and yet Paige can’t help but feel that there is some attraction between them. Morgan is a master of romance and she knows how to set the pages sizzling. Believe me, once you reach the lift scene, you will understand what I mean!

So, to summarise, I found Sleepless in Manhattan to be a hugely entertaining story full of lust, romance, a fantastic backdrop and some very likeable characters. I cannot wait to read book no.2 in this series. I’m hoping that it’s Frankie’s story next as Sleepless in Manhattan seems to have given us a sneaky preview of what’s to come!
