Review

Thanks to Random House UK, Cornerstone and NetGalley for providing me with a copy of Cover Story in return for an honest review.

I've seen this book described as a 'modern day Austen' and I think that is a perfect description for this delightful book.

Beth is a new-comer to the village. She is a recent university drop out, hiding from her mother in an empty holiday house in the village whilst planning her sister’s shoestring wedding.

Beth quickly meets Rachel, a recent divorcée who has moved to the village, into a house previously used by her and her ex-husband as a weekend home.

Finally, we have Lindy. A local girl and single mother bringing up her two boys with assistance from her parents and grandmother.

As usual with Katie Fforde’s writing, the characters are one of the main joys of this book. They are all thoroughly likeable and believable characters. The three girls are so different in character, but complement each other perfectly with their own individual skills and personalities. They are so realistically written that you can picture yourself sat in Lindy’s messy lounge or Rachel’s pristine white kitchen. You become lost in the village life and yearn to be a member of that welcoming community.

After meeting the main characters, we are then introduced to the supporting characters and potential love interests:  Angus - the responsible brother of Lindy’s ex-husband and absent father of her children; Charlie - the cheeky farmer; Raff - the rough-round-the edges local ladies’ man; and Finn - the ex-popstar.

Whilst I found it slightly unbelievable at the speed in which the three girls decide to set up a business together, once I looked past that I found a fantastic story of friendship and community. The reader watches the bond form between the girls whilst going on a journey with them, living the highs and lows of their lives over those few months between their first meeting and the wedding.

This is a busy book leaving no time for the story to drag. It is a heart-warming story packed full of romance, humour and a few twists and turns along the way.

I thought A Vintage Wedding was a lovely bit of light-hearted escapism into the idyllic life of the Cotswold countryside. It is Fforde’s 21st novel and will almost certainly prove to be another hit for the author.

Rating: 3.5 out of 5

A Vintage Wedding will be available in hardback and e-book formats, including from Amazon UK where the Kindle version is listed at £6.02.
